It is obvious that you and I have very different lenses through which we view things like Celebrate Freedom Sunday, Mike Pence’s speech, and so forth. We apparently even have different lenses through which we view Jesus. You seem to believe Jesus would be very pleased with what went on at FBC Dallas on Celebrate Freedom Sunday. I, on the other hand, am convinced that Jesus – were He to walk in that church – would declare that they had profaned His Father’s house. Jesus didn’t mince words with those who profaned the temple.

I don’t in any way intend this as an indictment of the Republican party. It is simply an indictment of the behavior and attitudes I have cited. If Democrats exhibit such behavior and attitudes, I’ll be the first to stand against them.

During those long 17 years at our former church, I became convinced that for the vast majority of that church, their politics shaped their understanding of Jesus. They bent their understanding of Jesus and the Bible to fit their politics. It’s the same with Pastor Jeffress and FBC Dallas. Saying this probably offends you, but I believe it to be the truth.

For me, it’s the other way around. My understanding of Jesus comes first, and my political positions follow; Matthew 25: 31-46 has been especially convicting for me, and it largely shapes my political convictions.

But that’s probably not going to stop you from doubting my faith. You questioned Kamala Harris’s credentials as a Baptist because of her liberal politics; if you have said that about her, you would surely say it about my wife and me as well.

Again, Weekly Baptist Roundup is not about politics. I don’t use it to promote my political views. I do, however, use it to promote a progressive view of faith in Christ. Our historic Baptist principles flow from our understanding of Christ, and I will always promote and defend those principles as vigorously as I can – and call to account any Baptists who violate them.

  1. This series was very interesting and informative. From what I read and see expressed by some Christians nowadays, I think that Jesus was too “liberal” to be a Christian.
